Being Her Example

Tuesday, April 23, 2019

As we put Oaklyn down for bed tonight, Hunter asked... "are her eyes brown?" He has always wanted a brown eyed girl. His eyes are brown, the only one in his family, and when the nurse in the hospital told us Oaklyn's eyes are brown Hunter was thrilled. Over the past 4 years, I've noticed hints of green and bits of gold in the sun so I personally think they are more hazel. But, Hunter is still holding out for his brown eyed girl. So when he asked again tonight if her eyes looked brown, I responded as I usually do; "yeah they have some brown, but I see some green too." Oaklyn then looked up at me and said, "just like you, right mom? Me and you both have green in our eyes, right?" I responded with "yeah mine have a little bit of green in them." Then Hunter said, "but you also have brown like daddy!" Oaklyn did not like that answer and quickly let him know that her eyes are like mommy's and not his. Oaklyn is pretty much a spitting image of Hunter, with my hair. We hear it all the time, but Oaklyn doesn't like it. She is always telling me that her hair is like mine and not her dads. That her clothes are like mine, her smile is like mine, one time she even told me her pinky looks like mine. I've always thought it was sweet that she wants to be just like me, but today it felt sweeter than ever. As she looked up at me with a little wrinkle in her nose and the cutest baby teeth smile, I felt so much joy that I was raising a daughter that wants to be just like me.

After putting Oaklyn to bed and getting ready to put myself to bed, I started thinking more about raising my daughters. I felt so excited for the future... for back to school shopping, for prom dresses, for lunch dates, cooking holiday meals, for dance recitals, trips to get our nails done, girl talk, planning their weddings, and for teaching them that they are strong women. I kept coming back to Oaklyn's words, "Just like you mommy." They kept playing in my head. She wants to be just like me. She wants to look like me, act like me, talk like me, dress like me, and right now I am her biggest example of what a woman should be. My daughters will grow up knowing their mother did things a certain way, and then be able to choose if that's the way they want to do them. So, I hope to be setting the best example I can be. Whether we like it or not, we all become like our mothers... right? I hope as my girls grow older, I give them an example theyare proud to mimic. If you choose to drink orange juice with your breakfast every morning, chances are your daughter will too. If you choose to wear heels to church every week, your daughter will probably beg you for a pair of heels. If you show an interest in dance, your daughter will probably want to be a dancer. Our girls want to be just like their mommies, so let's give them an example we're proud of. We're raising the future of women and it's up to the mamas of little girls to be an example of strength, love, integrity, kindness, positivity, devotion, and virtue. I feel like if I want my girls to turn out the way I hope, I need to make sure I'm a good example first. I hope my Oaklyn girl knows that she can be and do whatever she puts her mind to, but if she chooses to be like her mama, I promise to give her an example I'm proud to have her follow.

Finding A Back To School Routine

Wednesday, September 12, 2018
This post is sponsored by Sparkling ICE but the content and opinions expressed here are my own.

I spent practically all summer wishing I had signed Oaklyn up for preschool. I love the kid more than I can handle, but I knew she was beyond ready. She spends a lot of her days following me around looking for something to do. She has tons of toys and plenty of things she could do, but she just wanted something more to challenge herself. We put her in gymnastics to give her something to do but she then broke her foot... oops. I ended up very last minute finding out I could still sign her up and we went for it! She was beyond excited and I was too! Finally a break! hahaha...

On the first day of school we spent extra time getting her ready and talked all about the fun things she was going to learn and do. It was so fun to see her walk in without any fear. I on the other hand, shed a few tears seeing my baby in school for the first time. I was SO excited for her, yet couldn't believe we were already at that point. It was the weirdest feeling leaving her there and just leaving. I missed her throughout the day and was just looking for things to do. When we picked her up, it was such a fun reunion. We were all happy to see each other and had so much fun talking about her day.

We're now into week three of preschool and I have come to realize that having a routine really helps! Oaklyn does afternoon preschool because she has always slept in. So, we go about our morning as usual leaving a little extra time to get ready. We make sure to do her hair special for preschool and I involve her in picking out her outfits for school. It's such a fun time to talk and hangout together before we're apart. As I do her hair she gets to eat a snack so she doesn't go to school on an empty stomach.

Then we load up the car and head to school! After walking her in, giving hugs and kisses goodbye, and watching from the window for a minute... I'm a free mom! Well... free from toddler mom ;) haha. I still have my baby Cam but she can't argue with me yet sooo I'll take it! After Oaks had been to preschool a few times I realized how wonderful it was to be able to enjoy a special "mommy drink" in the car while running errands. Cambria is still rear facing so she can't see me and even if she could, she can't talk and beg for some! I love being able to enjoy a Sparkling Ice drink as we get the to-do list done. I drink water all day everyday. It's really all I ever drink. So, it's really fun to add some flavor and fizz to my day! Sparkling Ice comes in 16 great true to life flavors, has zero calories, and zero sugar. I love that the colors and flavors are all naturally sourced. My absolute favorite flavor is Pink Grapefruit.

My favorite part of preschool days is picking Oaklyn up. I love hearing what she did and learned and the kids she played with. I wish so badly that I could be a fly on the wall to watch her, but I'll settle  for sitting with her and talking as she eats her after school snack. She loves when I save her a little bit of my "special drink" aka Sparkling Ice and I feel good about her drinking it since it is full of vitamins and antioxidants.

Whatever your new routine may be as your kids go to school for the first time or head back to school maybe even for the last time, remember to enjoy it a little with a special treat like Sparkling Ice. Click here to order Sparkling Ice on Amazon where you can find all 16 flavors! Also, being an Amazon Prime member will get you up to 15% off with free delivery when you Subscribe & Save. What's your favorite flavor??

PPD Round Two

Thursday, July 12, 2018

I've been meaning to write this post for some time now but couldn't seem to find the time to write it. #momlife. I've been asked several times if I went through PPD again this time. The short answer is no, not nearly anything like I did after having Oaklyn. But, I did have some form of baby blues and anxiety this time. It was short but it was still heavy. I thought I'd talk about what I did different this time and how it all went down quite a bit differently. This is a really personal topic, but I strongly believe it needs to be talked about more. I talked about this on my blog a few years ago, but I suffered from PPD really badly after having Oaklyn. The whole experience rocked my world and completely caught me off guard. While I had definitely felt upset and had low points before, I had never experienced something so life changing before. I remember feeling almost paralyzed from such intense feelings of failure, sadness, anxiety, anger, and loneliness. I honestly felt like I had no control over my emotions and thoughts which lead to feeling like I had no control over my life. I didn't connect well with my baby, the people around me, even my husband anymore! It completely took over my life and I felt consumed in a really dark cloud that could not be lifted. I knew it was really bad when I woke up from an awful dream and hoped that I would just die. I didn't have it in me to actually take my life, so I had hoped that somehow, it would just be taken from me. I actually remember praying that I would get in a car crash or something and that everyone would be okay except me. To me, it felt like everyone's lives would be better without me in them. Just so you know, I know how awful all that is. I know it's not true. I know how hard that is to read for some people... but I know better now and I hope that talking about the depths of those feelings I had will only help someone else know they aren't alone... Because of pride mostly, I chose to endure this awful time unmedicated. I kept thinking I could do it on my own. So here's my first piece of advice, please don't try to do it alone. There are so many resources out there! Take it from me who suffered through PPD severely for about 10 months... it's not worth it to live a life that you feel is worthless. If it takes medication or a therapist or whatever else, it's worth it.

Okay back to it... So, when I found out I was pregnant with Cam, one of my first thoughts was PPD. It completely terrified me thinking I had to go through it again. I spent most of my pregnancy hoping this baby would never come out. I was THAT scared. I was honestly dreading the arrival of this baby. I started putting the nursery together extremely late, I put off washing all the newborn clothes, and I packed my hospital bag the night before being induced... You guys, I was seriously sick to my stomach over going through all I went through with Oaklyn. It. Was. Miserable. I did my research this time on ways to prevent it, I invested in a few things I hoped would help ease my anxiety, and I prayed continuously that I would have a different experience this time around. The night before, I felt a weird amount of peace. I laid down for bed, put my hands on my tummy, and started to talk to this baby I was about to meet. I told her I loved her and apologized that I might be a little crazy at first. I told her I would love her like crazy but that I would probably make mistakes... More than anything, I think I was talking to myself trying assure myself that it would all be okay.

The next morning I woke up with a bundle of nerves. Yes, I was nervous about the labor and delivery part... but I was mainly worried about how I would feel after it was all said and done. I honestly felt like I was just getting myself back before getting pregnant. I didn't want to entirely lose myself again. I will forever be grateful that I decided to deliver at a completely different hospital than I did with Oaklyn because it was a fresh start. I didn't want to be thinking about the way I felt in the hospital the first time around. I didn't want my previous negative experience to affect my second birth. You guys, that was such a great decision! I loved my doctor with Oaklyn, but chose a different one this time because I wanted a different hospital. I delivered at Orem Community and it was all around a wonderful experience but here's what made the biggest differences for me... 1) I insisted on keeping the curtains open. I wanted to let as much light in as possible. Having the sunshine let into my room created a really happy environment for me. 2) Everyone in the room stayed calm. Hunter was encouraging, my nurse and doctor were awesome, and my sister calmly watched and took photos after. It was honestly perfect for me. 3) Family and friends came to visit almost immediately after she was born. Having that company there was so good for me. It made me feel so much less alone and I really felt the love and support I needed. 4) I brought a comfy robe to change into. The day after her birth, I wore a floral robe, took a shower, and put on some mascara. I couldn't believe how much good it did to just take care of myself a little. 5) I took advantage of the nursery. With Oaklyn, I refused it. I felt like I was a bad mom if I had them take her. It was hard to let them take cam because those feelings crept back in, but I got three straight hours of incredibly needed sleep and that helped rejuvenate me to be a better mom for her.

The first week was mostly wonderful. Cam was the dreamiest little newborn, my mom was there to help with anything I needed, Hunter was home quite a bit, and I was just able to ease into life with two. However, one afternoon the flood gates opened and I was so frightened by it I felt like I was drowning. Mom, don't get mad at me for not telling you about this part... I didn't want to scare you ha. Cam had an appointment to get her bilirubin levels tested. The hospital was right by a cool park so my mom took Oaklyn and I took Cam. The second my mom and Oaks left I had a meltdown. I sobbed on my way to the hospital and could not get myself under control. I missed Oaklyn, I missed my body, I felt frantic about totally random things... suddenly I was so nervous that the awful post partum depression was back. I texted Hunter and let him know how I was feeling so he was aware. He was awesome and supportive and that helped tons. But, I just couldn't convince myself I was okay. I choked back tears the entire time I was at the hospital. Cam was being an angel and really nothing should have been upsetting to me, but I felt the opposite. That is what PPD and PPA is... it's having absolutely no control over your thoughts or emotions and it is completely awful. I picked up my mom and Oaklyn and the rest of the afternoon was going well. My mom had to leave to meet with a client she had in the area and we all tried to nap. Hunter was holding cam, oaks was asleep, and there I was, sobbing about who knows what? Hunter was a champ and just talked me through it. He held me and did everything he could to make sure I was okay. More than anything I just felt so disappointed. I totally thought that this time would be different and there I was feeling helpless and overwhelmed all over again. Hunter and I both thought it was a good idea for me to see my doctor and discuss medication and just knowing that was an option gave me a moment of peace. I was able to get a little sleep and woke up with hope. The next week or so went a million times better. I was so much less emotional and I was getting good amounts of sleep. I started to feel like maybe I was in the clear again.

After my mother in law left, I was completely on my own. Hunter worked two jobs and went to school full time and was pretty much gone from 7am-11pm every night. I felt SO alone. I was impatient with Oaklyn, I was tired, I was overwhelmed, I felt hopeless and helpless and suddenly it all surfaced again. I was hardly getting sleep because my anxiety was taking complete control of my body and I just wanted to run away from all of this and never look back. If you read my post about PPD after Oaklyn, you might remember something Hunter had told me one night when the depression and anxiety were at an all time high... He told me that I just needed to accept the trial. That I needed to stop trying to push it out of my life and feel sorry for myself, instead I needed to embrace it. Part of embracing it was praying and asking the Lord to help me through it. If it wasn't time for Him to take it away, then I just needed His help to get me through it. In this moment the second time around, of feeling lost and broken, I pleaded with my Heavenly Father that He would get me through it all in one piece. That I would figure out how to gain even a little bit of control over all of this, and that I would feel strong and able. The next few days got gradually better as I truly looked for ways to make my life feel normal again. And I think that's the biggest difference I made this time around. Instead of trying to act like it wasn't there when it clearly was, I chose to recognize it, live with it, and change it. The first time around I bottled up all of the feelings and unwanted emotion which caused an unhealthy amount of pent up sadness, anger, and anxiety that would all release really heavy when I didn't expect it. This time, I decided to keep working on blog stuff because that helps give me feelings of purpose. This is a weird one... but I decided to shower at night again like I used to. I always felt like I didn't have time to at night and I was so tired that I just stopped doing it even though I loved it. So, I made that a priority again. I got ready every morning even if that took sticking oaks in front of the tv and wrapping cam on my chest... I got ready and in turn felt ready for whatever life through my way. I went on a walk every single day. Whether it was short or long, I went. I needed that sunshine and fresh air desperately. I napped when my girls napped. I insisted that once a day, they would nap at the same time so I could nap. I tried not to care about things that needed to get done, and instead tried to care about my personal needs. I tidied up every night. Not any major deep cleaning, I just tidied up. That way I woke up to a clean apartment and felt more motivated to make it a good day. I made my bed everyday, because that meant I at least accomplished one thing on my to-do list haha! I made an effort to have a play date with friends once a week so I got girl talk and Oaklyn got to play with friends. I Facetimed and called my mom whenever I wanted because honestly, I just missed her and felt a lot of support and love from her. She always answered and it helped tons since Hunter worked so much. I started working out and eating healthier at the 6 week mark and was so impressed at how much better my mood was. And lastly, I said yes to help SO much more than I ever did with Oaklyn. People wanted to help, so I let them. You guys, I got meals for two entire weeks after my mother in law left because friends just kept asking if they could bring them. It was a lifesaver! All of these things brought my anxiety levels down which helped me to get things done and when I got things done I was less prone to depression.

I can't even begin to explain how thankful I am that this whole experience went so much more smooth. I absolutely had hard days, I absolutely still do... but I feel like I have such a better handle on it this time around. I also believe that even though I was able to get through it unmedicated, not everyone is. I think we have modern medicine for a reason. If you just don't feel like yourself after having a baby, if you feel more anxious, angry, sad, unmotivated, easily upset, or just simply put unhappy... there is no shame in seeing a doctor to discuss your options. Because guess what, there are options and that is such a huge blessing. PPD/PPA is so common you would be shocked. What isn't common is people being open and honest about it. It does not define you, it does not make you a bad mom, it is nothing to be ashamed of. I want all of you moms out there to remember you're enough. You are more than enough... because you are absolutely everything to them. To those tiny humans you created. I remember looking at Cambria sleeping one day and I thought to myself; "you are, because of me." You are here, you are alive, you are staying alive, because of me. That thought felt equally as terrifying as it was beautiful but I am trying so hard to remember that I am meant to feel joy. These little people demand a lot from us, but they were also sent to us so we can feel joy. I can promise each of you that there is so much joy to be felt and that the storm of anxiety and depression will pass if you let it. If you need support and love surrounding this topic, let me know! I'll make sure you find it.

Shopping With Two Littles

Thursday, September 7, 2017

Friends! I'm here to tell you about a baby MUST HAVE today.
This product is useful no matter how many kids you have, but it has been a lifesaver so far with my two little kiddos!
So, let me paint a scenario in your head for a second...
You have this cute new little baby who fell asleep in her carseat.
You also have a little two year old who would be a complete nightmare if you let her "walk" alongside you at any store.
You also only have one cart and somehow have to fit all of your groceries inside that one cart with the carseat and that two year old sitting in the seat of the cart.
Sounds difficult right? RIGHT!
I was totally the mom who stacked Triscut boxes on top of Oaklyn's car seat when she was tiny haha!
I mean where else would you put them with that huge car seat taking up all the space?
Despite the fact that shopping with kiddos is already less than ideal, it's also challenging trying to figure out where to ya know... put everything!
Insert the Binxy Baby Shopping Cart Hammock!

You guys, I'm not kidding when I say this thing is a MUST for any momma.
It is amazing and a total lifesaver when you are doing your grocery shopping.
So what exactly is it??
Binxy Baby is a shopping cart hammock for your little one to lounge in while you fill up your grocery cart.
It has clips that hook onto the rails of the cart which can hold up to 50 pounds!
It has a infant carseat safety strap to keep the carseat secure, or a secure seat harness to keep your little one lounging comfortably and safe.
It also has 2 layers of fabric to hold in your little one.

I just keep it rolled up in the back seat of my car so I always have it ready when I need it.
If Cambria is asleep, I just put the entire car seat in the hammock.
If she is awake, I just put her in the hammock and let her look around.
Either way is so simple to use and makes SO much space for groceries in the cart!
Literally everywhere I go, I get stopped by numerous people asking what it is and where they can get one.
It's just THAT much of a necessity!
I highly recommend this product and I know it can change your grocery shopping experience as a mom.
Check out the Binxy Baby website to find the design that you like best!

Finding Strength in Motherhood

Thursday, March 2, 2017

Before having Oaklyn, I'd like to say I was pretty brave. Confident too. I had what I needed to understand figured out and didn't worry about the rest. If something was wrong, I got it fixed. If something made me sad, I dealt with it. If I had to put on my big girl pants, I pulled up that zipper and went for it. A whole lot of things changed for me after having my sweet daughter. There's the simple things that were to be expected like buying diapers often, sleeping less, hearing lots of crying, less date nights, a messier house, and you know... having a tiny person always following me into the bathroom. But, there were a few bigger things that I guess I just didn't expect. One thing in particular is the fact that I managed to dig up strength that I didn't know existed. I found bravery that was hiding in the back of my closet and quite frankly, I didn't know I'd ever need it. Like I said in the beginning, I thought I was pretty brave before having her...

Here's what I would like to classify motherhood as... "Dealing with fears you didn't know existed to find strengths you didn't know you had." Oh and mixed in with a whole lot of snuggles, poopy diaper explosions, and the cutest little person clothes. But in all honesty, motherhood has brought out so much of me I truly had no clue existed. I became a different person the moment they laid my child on my chest and evolved into something I never could have imagined over the course of several 2am parties with my mini bff. Because when you become a mother, you learn to think about someone other than just yourself. You learn how to be brave for a scared little child. You learn how to care for and tend to every basic and extraordinary need out there. You literally have to dig up another part of you that you've never needed before.

I vividly remember the first doctor's appointment I went to when Oaklyn had to get shots without daddy there. I didn't know who was more afraid... me or her. She of course had no idea what was coming though so it was probably me. The checkup was done and over with and the nurse came in ready to poke my baby girl. I knew (and still know) I was making the right choice for her, but was worried out of my mind that I wouldn't be able to truly comfort her afterwards. I cried harder than she did when I saw her little face after feeling the first poke, but we all made it out alive. Oaklyn clung to me and snuggled me tighter than ever before. She trusted me. She needed me. So, that part of me I had no idea existed came out and made sure my child knew I was right there comforting her. I drove home a whole new mother. I was stronger and I was more secure with myself. This same thing, different circumstances, has happened several other times... When I prove to myself that I was made for this, that motherhood is and always has been built in me. Times like teaching her how to pick up and eat food for the first time, helping her through her first cold when I felt clueless and helpless myself, and kissing that scraped up owie even though the sight of blood makes me queasy. Somehow, I always came out stronger and that much more confident. Because, the toughest job I've ever had has also helped me find the most strength.

Before becoming a mommy, I had no idea I would fear what I do now... my child being constipated, it being too cold in our home, the first time she tried a new fruit, the way her little nose gets clogged when she has a cold... I had no clue any of this would cause me to lose sleep. But it did and still does because I love my baby more than I knew possible and I will do anything to keep her well and happy. I had no idea there were more strengths to find, but I'm continually finding more right as I need them. Parenting doesn't come with an instruction manual, and it surely doesn't come with anxiety pills... but it does shape you into exactly what The Lord wants you to be. The words "God gave us families to help us become what he wants us to be" of a Primary song have never sounded truer than they do now. I know Oaklyn was sent to me to help me become exactly what I need to be. She is shaping me into the person my family needs, and helping me see the woman The Lord needs of me as well. I'm sure I have a long way to go, because life just keeps throwing curve balls, but I'm so thankful for all I've learned so far. I remember thinking I had it all figured out when I was 19. Life was so easy and there was so much good ahead. But for me, it absolutely took becoming a mother to really understand who I am. It took becoming a mother to really see my divine role and calling in life. It took becoming a mother to find strengths I truly didn't know I had. Because somewhere along the way, you realize this journey is so much more, and so are you.

All my love,
Aleigh Joy

Changing Table Necessities with Huggies

Monday, August 22, 2016
This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #SuperAbsorbent #CollectiveBias

I'm a young mom, I'm also a first time mom, but I've learned more than I ever could have imagined these past 18 months in the parenting world. I've learned that at times it's going to be hard, at times it'll be challenging, and sometimes you'll want to throw in the towel and just run away... I've also learned that your heart will grow ten times bigger, motherly instincts do actually kick in, and you'll love like you've never loved before. But, most of all, I've learned that being prepared will save you a whole lot of time and energy during your day to day life. Whether it's always having a snack on hand or keeping stocked up on Huggies diapers... being ready with "mom supplies" will keep you mentally sane during all hours of the day (and night!).

Let's flash back to a moment I'll never forget for a second. Oaklyn was only a few months old and was going thought a major sleep regression. I was sleep deprived, incredibly grumpy, and I was lucky if I remembered to put shoes on on my way out the door. Because I was so tired, I forgot that my wimpy little package of off brand diapers was just about to run out. It only came with about 24 diapers, was over $15, and I was already almost out! One night, Oaklyn absolutely would not go back to sleep. I had tried just about everything and was about to lock myself in my closet because I was flat out exhausted. I felt her diaper and even though it was nowhere near full, it could still probably be changed. I had one diaper left in the changing table, it was a risky move, but if it made her sleep it was well worth it. After I changed her, I began to rock her back to sleep. She was drifting off into dream land and I was holding my breath and wishing so badly that this was all it took. Then it happened... Her little body began to tense up and her little face got all scrunchy. I knew exactly what was coming. Then with a whole lot of force, she let loose. Part of me was happy that her tummy must be feeling better, but the other part of me was clueless as to what I was going to do now. With lovely baby poo coming up her back, I yelled for Hunter to search all corners of the house for just one clean diaper. Luckily, he did find one but can you imagine how much easier it would have been if I just had a huge box of Huggies Little Snugglers Plus from Costco in her closet?

I don't know about all of you other moms, but I get incredibly stressed if things don't go smoothly. That stress then rubs off on Oaklyn and it's a big mess all around. I have learned over time that a high stress mama will rub off on her child and will create a high stress kiddo in return. I'm nowhere near perfect, and I absolutely get stressed several times a day, but I'm learning how to manage that and especially how to be more prepared. I've discovered certain baby products I love and had to throw away several I definitely didn't like. I've had to slow down and really listen to what it is that Oaklyn needs and take mental notes so we don't run into the same problem later on. I've also had to learn that stocking up on everything we need, will save me hours of worrying in the long run. Two things I absolutely always keep stocked with our favorite baby items are my diaper bag, and the changing table. I know people say you don't necessarily need a changing table, but I truthfully feel like you do. We do both the morning and night time routine on the changing table, and every single diaper change happens on it. It's comfortable, safe, and holds everything I need. So, today I'm going to share exactly what it is I always keep in our changing table and a very inexpensive and effective way to keep it organized.

My changing table drawers have definitely evolved over time. In the beginning, I probably could have stocked every drawer with diapers and still not have enough ;) As time went on I had to make sure I had toys to entertain Oaklyn during changes and blankets to keep her new little body warm. However, there's a few things that have stayed consistent.

Drawer One:
-Huggies Little Movers Plus size 4. We love these diapers! We've tried several different brands and have decided that sticking with Huggies is absolutely the way to go. We get these diapers at out local Costco. These are Huggies' most absorbent diapers, hence the Plus, and are exclusive to Costco. With the double grip strips, they are an absolutely perfect fit for my really active baby. Not to mention, they have a 12 hour Leak Lock protection which is perfect for night time! They come in sizes one through six and if you get them at Costco, you won't have to worry about running out any time soon. They come with so many and have truly been a life and money saver for our family. There is currently a deal running where you can get Little Snugglers Plus (Sizes 1 & 2)  for $37.49, $31.49 after $6 discount and Free shipping. (this offer valid 9/1 to 9/25) Or Little Movers Plus (Size 3, 4, 5, & 6) for  $42.99, $36.99 after $6 discount and Free shipping. (this offer valid 9/1 –to 9/25) Also, starting in August Little Snugglers Plus will also be available in size Newborn starting - $29.99 available in select warehouses and online at Costco.com
-Wipes. Find a brand of wipes you like, and always keep them stocked up right next to your diapers for quick and painless changes.
-Rash Cream. Again, you are going to have to find one that works for your baby's skin, but always keep it on hand... you never know when a rash will break out!
-Hygiene Essentials. This is one that will change with time as your baby's needs change. We always keep her toothpaste and toothbrush, lotion, and a little medicine in case a cold comes on.
-Hair Care. Obviously this is different for every baby but mine came with a whole lot of hair! So I keep a brush, hair elastics, and occasionally a few bows but her big stash is in her closet. I also keep her pacifier clips in the top drawer.

separated the different compartments in efforts to stay a little more organized and you'll never believe how easy it was to make the separators! I actually just cut the flaps off of my Huggies Little Movers Plus box and stuck them in my drawer! As Oaks gets older I'll probably get little containers to stick the smaller items in.

Drawer Two:
-Jammies. Part of Oaklyn's bed time routine is to get in her jammies while on the changing table so it only makes sense to have some clean ones in a drawer!
-Blankies. Blankets are the easiest way to get Oaks to calm down. Some diaper changes are rough, so I always keep blankets close by to let her snuggle.

Drawer Three:
Extra Sheets. Being prepared with extra sheets makes the world of a difference! Waking up to a wet bed, a spilt bottle, a diaper explosion, or even worse throw up can make for a messy clean up. While I wash her sheets, having an extra to throw on for nap time helps take my stress down immensely!

Obviously over time I know some of these things might not matter anymore and if you are a mom of a smaller baby, you might need a whole lot more! So adjust your separators as you need to and keep your essentials close by. Keeping your favorite items stocked up will help you stay calm during the most stressful situations. So now I want to know, what do you keep in your changing table??

All my love,
Aleigh Joy

Pamper Yourself With Groupon

Tuesday, August 9, 2016
This post has been sponsored by Groupon. All opinions are mine alone.

One thing that I have come to realize I really need since becoming a wife and a mother, is "me time." I love making memories as a family but there's just something about getting pampered and not having a worry in the world during it. Often times, the days are long and I go to bed realizing I didn't do anything but chores and I feel stressed about all the things on my plate. Getting pampered helps relieve some of that stress and really helps my mental health. Whether it's receiving a much needed massage, getting a fresh coat of polish on my nails, or getting a new hairstyle, having some time alone helps me feel refreshed and rejuvenated.

As much as I love feeling special and getting a spa day, these sorts of things can really add up fast. That's why I'm so glad Groupon helps me save on all things Health, Beauty, and Wellness while also providing quality services on their site. I ensure that I'm always signed into my Groupon account on my computer so that I can pull up all the local deals right around me making it easy to save money in my area. There are so many different ways you can save on pampering yourself with Groupon thanks to their daily deals on massages, nail salons, hair salons, day spas, and much more!

My family also loves to go on adventures together. We love getting out of the house and doing a fun activity together, trying a new restaurant, and going on vacation. Groupon helps you save on all of those things with new listings constantly. Groupon has been such a wonderful resource to help my family save on services and dining, to retail products.

A Motherly Bond

Tuesday, July 5, 2016

It was somewhere around 11 am and my brand new baby was set on my chest for the first time.
We had prayed for her by name for the past 6 or so months after we had found out her gender and actually agreed on a name, but I still looked at her swollen little face and said out loud, "Are you Oaklyn?"
I loved her instantly and cried tears of joy upon meeting her, but I still felt like I didn't actually know her.
She cried and I looked to the nurses as if they would tell me what do to with her, as if they knew her better than I did.
I started rocking her and attempted different ways to nurse her and I thought to myself, "I can't wait to get to know you."

Hunter's side of the family has several grandchildren.
I've been around since the day he became an uncle and when I married into the family, I went from never being an aunt to having 5 nieces and 6 nephews.
I remember hearing each of my sister in laws saying that their babies had a specific cry that helped them understand what they wanted.
They knew each of their children so well and always seemed to be able to tend to their needs.
Their kids looked to their mommies for comfort and well, everything else they needed, because they knew each other and had a bond like nobody else.

So there I was, sitting in that hospital bed wondering when that bond would come and when I would understand my child in a way that no one else would
And then over time... it just happened.
It happened over the course of the several nights I was up with her while the rest of the world was sleeping.
It happened when her first little tooth popped through and her fevered little body only wanted mama to comfort her.
It happened when she was learning to walk and looked for my hand so I could guide her through this new skill she was figuring out.
It happened when I sat with her on the bathroom floor with the hottest water running through the shower in hopes that the steam would unclog her stuffy little nose.
It happened through bath times, feedings, being rocked to sleep, endless diaper changes, snuggles and kisses, dancing together, doctors appointments, being worried sick during the wee hours of the night, giggles and tickles, and being together every single day.

Those first few weeks home from the hospital, I thought I might never know how to console her when she cried or get her to sleep longer than 15 minutes on her own.
Somehow though, it just happens... and when it does, you'll have never felt a more selfless and unconditional love.
Because sometimes you just need a break and wish your baby would let someone else hold them.
But, each time you pass them off and they reach back for mama, you think your heart just might burst of love.

I remember several times holding someone else's baby and looking to the mom when he or she started to cry.
Now, I am that mom and I couldn't be more happy about the bond I get to experience with my little girl.
I know it may sound cliche, but you truly can't understand the bond between a mother and her child until you become a mama.
Becoming a mother changes you and that phrase only scratches the surface.
Lately, when I hear Oaklyn cry, or I see her eyes light up, I seem to immediately know what she wants or is happy about.
It's not because I'm some baby whisperer... it's because I have a bond with my child that nobody else will ever have.
I think I finally understand why my mom was so protective over me and why Hunter's mom cried when every child left the house.
As a mom, your baby will always have a special place in your heart and you'll hope that they will always still need you in some way or another.
The bond and connection a mother shares with her baby is the whole reason motherhood is so special and beautiful.
So for now, I'll enjoy each time when Oaklyn's little arms immediately reach back for me the second I hand her off to someone else.
I've spent countless sleepless nights working on that bond ;)

All my love,
Aleigh Joy

A Little Kindness Never Hurt Nobody

Monday, June 20, 2016

I've been thinking quite a bit about this topic lately and it just so happens that I made a guest appearance on Steffanie's (from The Urban Haremocktail periscope series and the topic was on being kind.
This topic has been on quite a few mother's (or parents in general) minds lately based off the current tragedies that have made the news.
(If you are unaware please refer to the articles here and here)
It is interesting, and quite frankly, annoying, that the parents of these children have become the subject of ridicule online as they mourn the loss of their child.
No parent wants to outlive their child. Ever.
The thought alone makes my heart ache.

So what's interesting to me, is that others can't seem to offer their condolences to these families but instead feel the need to tell them that the death of their child was their own fault.
Seeing the cruel remarks of those hiding behind a computer screen makes me sick, and it needs to stop. Now.
These words are harsh and unfair, and truly will do nothing beneficial in the end.
You see, It’s easy to throw other parents under the bus when something horrific happens because we want to believe that we are somehow better.
It's easy for parents to believe that their "superior parenting" can prevent a tragedy and that bad things can only happen to an "irresponsible parent."
Want to know the truth?
Bad things happen to good parents, good families, good people... and when those bad things strike they deserve our empathy, and never our judgement.

I want to share a quick story with you:
Somewhere around 10 months ago, when Oaklyn wasn't quite mobile, I was able to set her on top of my bed without worry.
In the mornings, she would lay next to me as I would relieve myself from the night and pump to supply food for her.
She would smile and grab her toys as we laid there together.
One morning I got bored while pumping and turned my head for a split second to grab my phone.
When I looked back she was already off the bed, in mid air, about to fall on the floor.
Her little body hit and she instantly began to scream.
I jumped off the bed and frantically grabbed her.
We spent the rest of the morning rocking on the rocking chair as I probably whispered "I'm sorry" 100 times in her little ear.
The reason I share this story with you, is because it is an example, though far less tragic, that resembles what is currently happening.
I'm sure it would be easy for a lot of you to say that I should have just kept my eyes on her and that wouldn't have happened.
I'm also sure that some may say I shouldn't be so glued to my phone and that my daughter wouldn't have fallen.
But what I'll tell you, is that it was an accident.
It was an accident I wish would've never happened, but it did and accidents happen often.
Especially when you are a parent balancing a million things every single day.

There is no such thing as a perfect earthly parent.
So to all of you other imperfect parents out there, I beg you, to stop shaming and blaming all other mothers and fathers that are just trying to do their best daily.
My heart breaks for all of the families that lose their children to bizarre and horrific accidents daily.
We all often point fingers, but try instead, to take the high road and show kindness to those in need.
Instead of criticizing and ridiculing, try uplifting and rallying around others.
It's much easier to smile than frown, and it is much easier to share a good thought than to deny it.
Try your hardest to be soft and kind instead of letting the world make you bitter and hard.
If the words you wrote on social media appeared on your skin, would others still think you are beautiful?
We all say that we want to teach our children to be kind and uplifting, well the best way to do so, is to practice what you preach.
So I encourage all of you to back up other parents instead of tearing them down.
Parenting is hard enough, we don't need bystanders making it harder.
And always remember, a little kindness never hurt nobody.

All my love,
Aleigh Joy

Buy a Bag, Help Save a Child | Barri Handbags

Sunday, May 29, 2016

Happy Sunday friends!
I am so excited to be talking about Barri handbags on the blog today!
As you all know by now, I am incredibly passionate about the cause, O.U.R (operation underground railroad), and doing all that I can to help support it.
That's why I was so excited to learn about Barri, a handbag company that gives 10% of sales to OUR to help save children's lives!
Not only are these bags absolutely beautiful, but they are supporting the fight against the third most lucrative crime in the world.
How amazing is that??

I wanted to spread a little more awareness about Barri today, because their kickstarter fund is currently live and has 3 days left to go!
With your support and help, Ashley, the founder, will be able to produce these gorgeous bags and donate to O.U.R.
With three days left, they have a little over $3,000 until the goal is reached!
If you've wondered how you can help end fight child sex trafficking, this is a great way to help!
Simply click here to go straight to the kickstarter fund and see the video where Ashley explains the mission and purpose of her company.

I was able to test out and touch these bags on Saturday and I can honestly tell you that they are amazing quality.
They had awesome durability, the colors were gorgeous, and the hardware was very well crafted.
They are made of all high quality materials and are produced in fair wage factories.
Ashley has tons of experience in designing handbags and after looking at them in person, it definitely shows!
So lucky for all of you, if you donate to the kickstarter fund you will receive 15% off your preorder purchase and be guaranteed a bag from the beautiful, b. brave collection.

I loved talking to Ashley about her company and hearing how passionate she is about it.
I absolutely know she is doing this with a purpose and doesn't want to start just another handbag company.
She wants this one to be different and special!
Besides already deciding to support O.U.R, she also has a goal to support and uplift women everywhere.
She wants to create a community within Barri to help women know just how special they are.
Each bag has a metal plate inside to help you remember your worth, daily.
The plate reads: | b. inspired | b. kind | b. active | b. change |
Each bag also comes with a purse fob in front with the word "freedom" inscribed to always remind you of the cause you helped support with your purchase.

As you can see, a whole lot of time and effort were put into creating these bags!
If you have the means, please help support this awesome company with their kickstarter campaign!
If you don't have the means, please share their facebook page, follow their instagram, or simply just tell your friends and family to spread the word!

All my love,
Aleigh Joy

Become an Abolitionist

Wednesday, May 11, 2016

Hunter and I had the opportunity to attend a screening of the film, The Abolitionists, last week.
To be completely honest, we went not really thinking we would get much out of the movie and used it as more of a date night.
However, we left with a completely different feeling!
Both of us left that night completely inspired to do our part in making a difference.

So... what is the movie about?
The shortened version is this...
Today there are over two million enslaved children forced into the sex industry around the world.
If you ask me, that alone is completely sickening.
So the movie is about rescuing these children and saving them from the horror they are living.
On December 10th, 2013 Special Agent Tim Ballard (aka Hunter's mother's cousin's son... ha did you get that?) turned in his Homeland Security badge and  resigned from his employment with the United States government.
He had spent over a decade rescuing these poor children from child sex tourism both domestically and overseas.
Though his job was difficult, he was proud that his country was one of very few in the world who was actually doing anything about this problem.
However, mired in red tape and bureaucracy, Tim left to begin saving the children that he saw falling out of the purview of the US government.
These children constitute over 90% of the children lost to child sex slavery and he could do nothing to help them while in the employment of the US government.
This is a story about the lost children from other countries and the rescue team’s exploits as they investigate and liberate enslaved children from around the world.

Okay, so you're thinking one of 3 things right now... maybe a few of them actually... but I'm sure you're thinking something along the lines of...
1) "Wow sounds interesting! I'd actually love to see this movie! Tell me more about where and when I can see it!"
2) "I'm a parent myself and I really don't want to watch this. It sounds like it would make me sick. How else can I help?"
3) "I'm not very interested."

So, here are my answers!

If you're number one, yay!
You really will not regret it!
Click this link to buy your tickets today :)
Also, tell all your friends to go see it!
It will only be in theaters for one day at the moment, which is May 16th.
If we can fill those theaters it will receive a theatrical release and play longer!

If you're number two... I understand!
That's actually exactly how I felt after reading up on it before I saw the movie.
It's hard, as a mom, to think about the terrible situations these children are in.
However, the movie is very well done!
It is made in a PG-13 manner because they wanted to make it appropriate for young moviegoers to see what is happening around them as well.
It is meant to caution them and wake the audience up while not scaring them away from the theater due to the darkness of the subject matter.
The goal was not to sicken people but rather to inform them and motivate them to do whatever they could do as individuals, within their own sphere of influence, to stop this plague of human trafficking.
Not to mention, 15% of the profit of movie sales from theaters will be going directly to Operation Underground Railroad which is the organization that creates the missions to save these children.
However, if you see the movie at a Larry H. Miller theater 100% of the proceeds will go to "OUR"!
If you still don't feel like seeing the movie is a good fit... you can donate by clicking here!

And if you're number three... please hear me out!
This is something that isn't just happening overseas.
It is happening right here in America too, and we need to protect our children from it.
In fact, Utah is actually the number one state where child sex trafficking happens.
Terrifying!
Please join me in taking a stand against this!
Check out this site to be even more inspired.

Please join us in taking a stand against this horrifying crime that generates over 32 billion dollars yearly.
There are also several other ways you can help... like attending events!
Here is a link to a few that sound pretty cool!
My little family will be attending the Rescue Run 5k in Lehi on May 21st and we are so excited!
I would absolutely love to see you there!
All money raised by the run will be donated to Operation Underground Railroad.
In just two years, they have already saved over 419 victims!
Just imagine how many more we can save if we just bring awareness to this subject!
To register click here and make sure to use code: INSTAGRAM to get $5 off your registration :)

I really hope you go see this movie in theaters on May 16th and attend the run!
I'll be there walking with my Oaks ;)

All my love,
Aleigh Joy
